GRANITE, SAND & SALT

Wilsons Promontory National Park

Granite, Sand & Salt is a slower-paced journey through the southern end of Wilsons Promontory, with enough time built in to really enjoy the places we camp. We’ll carry what we need between Sealers Cove, Little Waterloo Bay and Oberon Bay, but the days are deliberately manageable, leaving room for swims, long lunches, wandering the beach and settling into camp without feeling like we need to keep moving. It’s still a proper multi-day hike, just with a little more breathing room. You’ll want to throw a book in your pack for this one.

What to expect:

Total Distance: Approx 42 km

Total Ascent: Approx 1200m

Typical Day: 8-14km

Time on foot: Around 3-6 hours

Terrain: Coastal track, beaches, forest, granite headlands

A scenic view of lush green mountains, a calm blue lake, and a partly cloudy sky, with a single tall tree in the foreground.

Highlights

  • Walk through a completely different side of Victoria, with white sand, turquoise water and granite headlands

  • Camp at beautiful coastal sites including Sealers Cove, Little Waterloo Bay and Oberon Bay

  • Spend four days linking beaches, forest and sheltered coves around the southern Prom

  • Enjoy a slower-paced journey with time for swims, long lunches and unhurried afternoons at camp

  • A great introduction to multi-day hiking, or simply a chance to spend a few relaxed days moving through beautiful coastal country

  • Carry what we need between camps as a small group, with plenty of time to settle into the rhythm of life outside

Four days around the southern Prom, linking quiet coves, granite headlands and some of Victoria’s best coastal camps.

Group of five hikers walking along a sandy beach with large rocks, with a dense forested hillside in the background.

Day 1: Telegraph Saddle to Sealers Cove

10 km | approx. 300 m ascent | 3 hrs

We begin at Telegraph Saddle and head east through eucalypt forest, ferny gullies and the rebuilt Sealers Cove boardwalk before reaching the coast. The final approach into Sealers is a great reveal, with forest giving way to a broad sheltered beach and clear water. It’s a manageable first day, with plenty of time to settle into camp and enjoy the cove.

Day 2: Sealers Cove to Little Waterloo Bay

13.4 km | approx. 500 m ascent | 4.5 hrs

A brilliant coastal day. We climb away from Sealers, pass through Refuge Cove and continue around rocky headlands and through forest towards Waterloo Bay. The route links two Grade 4 coastal sections before finishing beside the white sand and clear water of Little Waterloo Bay.

Day 3: Little Waterloo Bay to Oberon Bay

Approx. 8 km | approx. 250 m ascent | 3 hrs

We leave the east coast and continue west across the southern Prom through heathland, coastal scrub and granite country towards Oberon Bay. This is deliberately the gentler day of the trip, giving us a good chance of arriving early enough for a swim, a long lunch, a wander along the beach or an afternoon doing very little.

Day 4: Oberon Bay to Tidal River

7.6 km | approx. 130 m ascent | 2.5 hrs

Our final morning follows the west coast northward, walking the length of Oberon Bay before crossing rocky headlands and passing Little Oberon Bay on the way into Tidal River. It’s a relaxed coastal finish, with one last mix of beach, granite and tea-tree country before we arrive back at the main hub of the Prom.
